Hundreds of Foster Farms employees, upset about wages and working conditions, went on strike yesterday at the company's largest chicken plant in Livingston, California. Union leaders claimed that about 80 percent of the day shift stayed out and that much of the night shift would follow suit today. Even though the strike did not involve workers at other Foster Farms facilities, including processing plants in Turlock and Fresno, or its dairy operation, which sells milk, yogurt and ice cream products, Foster Farms has decided to close their Livingston, CA plant permanently, and move to Arkansas. An estimated 2,500 workers are expected to lose their jobs on a short notice, and the city is left in an economic disaster. Given the fact that Foster Farms is the largest private employer in Merced County, the Livingston plant closing story was largely covered by most TV stations and newspapers in Northern California. On the 6 oclock news, Chris Thomas (Moderator, Channel 10 Sacramento) bluntly asked her guests whether todays marketplace, with its deregulation and downsizing, can afford to reconcile economic and ethical behavior; and whether a big corporation like Foster Farms should be expected to do better than they are currently doing in Livingston.

In our globalized and hypermarketized economy, gains will always be privatized and costs always socialized. I believe that profits, generally, are all that should matter. The days of "welfare capitalism," which offered job security and wage increases commensurate with productivity improvements, are long gone. Regarding the specific issue of plant closing, I am a proponent of laissez-faire capitalism and I would forcefully argue this: I think corporations should be left alone. How can corporate managers possibly carry out all these tasks when everybody knows that business schools do not train business students (i.e. future corporate managers) to be social workers or specialists in environmental cleanup, or any of the other feel-good activities that activists insist managers should engage in?
