I am currently studying for my succession law exam and have a question I can't find the resources to understand. Please advise in relation to NSW law :)

What happens when people in their lifetime hand property to others and then when they die, does that property need to be handed back or not. If it does needed to be handed back - what is the characteristic of the transaction (if any)?
