As diversity is the central theme of Organizational Behavior for managers, let me discuss the issue a little more comprehensively. Most people view diversity in terms of color, sex, national origin, religion, or socioeconomic orientation. These visible elements of diversity are just the tip of the iceberg. Organizational behavior recognizes a more profound paradigm of diversity. Picture an actual iceberg with the physical differences listed at the tip. The top portion of water is tiny compared to what is beneath the surface.

We are each so unique. We each process information differently. We each have work and life experiences that shape the way we view the world and make decisions.

For an organization to operate profitably and competitively, the organization must create culture where people can freely and candidly express their different perspectives without the fear of retribution. Employees should be welcomed and feel appreciated for the differences that they bring with them. The diversity of thought breeds creativity and innovation. When a company respects and values diversity, it is more likely to generate various ideas and values that would not have previously been considered.

The demographics of the workforce has changed. It is becoming more diverse. Our economy has also caused diversity in the workplace. Our new diverse workforce requires a different management approach to lead it. As diversity increases, managers must address the challenges of understanding and treat all employees fairly. To accomplish organizational goals optimally, we must be a meeting of the minds between management and employees. Listening to and respecting the new ideas of the growing, diverse workforce can be a great asset and can hugely benefit an organization. The diverse employee experience could improve operational behaviors, processes, and how business is done and increase profits.
