"I AM MEDIA LITERATE!" The purpose of this paper is to critically examine a specific media product, and create an argument based on your analysis. Here are several approaches to this (these are just examples): Is there a movie or TV show that your friends/family love, and you think is overrated (Grey's Anatomy, The Masked Singer, The Notebook, Shawshank Redemption, etc.)? Is there a musical artist you feel is underrated or not taken seriously enough (Kid Cudi, Pentatonix, Weird Al, Billie Eilish, etc.)? Is there a media product you've always heard of, but have never taken the time to examine (The Godfather, Hamilton soundtrack, Sports Illustrated magazine, Seinfeld, TikTok, etc.)? A media product you find insulting/offensive (Howard Stern radio show, Paw Patrol, The Oregonian, etc.)? Why? What is your evidence? Start with "The Critical Process Behind Media Literacy" on page 23 of the textbook. You can use the stages as your basic template for this essay (Description, Analysis, Interpretation, and Evaluation). YOU CAN SKIP STAGE FIVE (ENGAGEMENT) FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT. The "Engagement" stage is important, but I want you to focus on the first four stages for this assignment. Examples of how much media to examine for this essay (can select one of the following): . One full length feature film Three-four episodes of a television show Three-four issues of a magazine Three-four issues of a comic book Three-four broadcasts of a radio show Three-four podcast episodes . A book A video game Selection of music from an artist Or, we can discuss other media products This assignment is purposely broad, so you can select the media product that most interests you. At the heart of this paper, you are making an original argument backed by specific evidence. For example: Dora the Explorer is much more violent than people realize. The Power of the Dog (2021) is not what it seems. It's actually a film about My sister claims Korean dramas are currently the highest form of entertainment. In this essay, I will prove her wrong. Who is the greatest rapper of the 1990s? In this essay, I make an argument that it's the underrated and will provide lyrics/rhymes from her 1995 CD People love Quentin Tarantino. However, I argue that he is a discuss his film(s) to prove this. When you provide evidence, be as specific as possible: From page 46 of The Great Gatsby... In the opening scene of Black Panther... From Season 3, Episode 6 of Friends... From the third track of his 2007 CD... and will Access: You must have access to the media product-especially the older ones. For example, if you want to analyze West Side Story but can't get a copy of the DVD/Blu-Ray (or can't stream the film), then you can't do it. Your paper will: Contain an introduction with your clearly stated argument, and a conclusion recapping how you proved your argument. Contain a body with a description, analysis, interpretation, and evaluation. Contain specific, detailed, and cited evidence. Be 4+ full pages (not including any potential reference list) Use standard 12 point font, double-spaced; no extra spaces between paragraphs. Be evaluated partly on spelling/grammar.
