I am struggling with my conclusion paragraph of this paper I am writing for interpersonal communication. I must conclude my paper with a summary of my main points (which are "what is communication apprehension", "accuracy of assessment", and "possible effects") and any final thoughts. And what I learned new about yourself (how much communication apprehension can effect my life), or perhaps confirm what you already knew (it did confirm that I already knew this)?
These are my body paragraphs so far...
What is Communication Apprehension
After viewing the different assessments, communication apprehension (CA) piqued my interest the most. I have always known that I struggle in this area so I wanted to see just how much. In simple terms, communication apprehension tells the level of anxiety and/or fear a person has while communicating with others or even anticipating the interaction (Bekelja Wanzer et al., 2017). A communication apprehension score below 50 indicates a low level of CA, while if it is above 80 this indicates a high level. The scale consisted of 24 questions, and after calculating the total score, with the formula provided, my result came to a score of 103. This score is on the high side. Most college students' communication apprehension scores are on average 65.6 (Bekelja Wanzer et al., 2017).
Accuracy of Assessment
Before taking this assessment I assumed I would be on the higher side, so after calculating my score I would agree with the results of this scale. I have always been more quiet and reserved in school or when meeting new people mostly due to social anxiety. I do notice that when I am talking with a group of people that is less than four or five I tend to be less stressed in those situations. Though the anxiety and fear that I experience in anticipation of communicating with others causes the stress to build up for me even more than it should. For example, one semester I had a class required for my major but after seeing the syllabus I immediately wanted to drop the class. The entire class was discussion based and I would have to present multiple times which caused me immediate anxiety just to think about it. I was so stressed about it that I changed my concentration in my major so I could avoid presenting in this class and taking it all together. This was a more extreme instance for me personally but a definite sign of communication apprehension.
Possible Effects
After reading about CA in the textbook, there are some communicative outcomes this trait may have on those who experience CA. In personal life, high levels of CA can cause someone to be lonelier and less open to meeting new people. Additionally, according to the textbook, "College students who experience higher levels of apprehension are less likely to emerge as leaders in work groups" (Bekelja Wanzer et al., 2017, p. 60). Individuals who score high on the communication apprehension assessment will more often than not experience anxiety about communication or try to avoid it completely (Bekelja Wanzer t al., 2017). The effects mentioned above could be true for those with CA but everyone may not experience them all or to the same degree.
