I am uncertain and need some guidance as to the distinction between intellectual property and real estate or that of tangible property?

On that note, I am unclear as to what reasons that intellectual property requires different legal protections than tangible or real property and would like some guidance in understanding this?

Out of curiosity and assistance in understanding, what high profile legal case where a form of intellectual property faced a legal challenge? If so, what is the result and possible type of damages awarded if there is any?
