SECRETARIAL JUDGEMENT - What would you do?

ASSIGNMENT 3

Using your secretarial judgement and knowledge of The Law Societys Code of Ethics, try to place yourself in each of the following circumstances, and explain in detail how you would handle each incident:

A. A famous hockey player comes into your law office to see another lawyer in the office regarding the terms of a contract. That lawyer's secretary comes into the lunch room at lunch time and mentions to everyone how good looking the hockey player is and expresses her regret that she had not had the opportunity to get his autograph.

B. Your boss is out of the office for the day and a client who is well-known to you telephones to discuss the details of her real estate transaction. During the conversation, the client asks you how she can best protect her legal rights with respect to the house in the event that she and her husband later separate.

C. Your firm hires a secretary who previously worked for another law firm. During a conversation with you, she quotes from memory the details of a divorce file regarding a rather prominent community figure.

D. A person comes into the office and demands to see a lawyer and refuses to give a name or business affiliation.

E. A person coming into the office gives both a name and a business affiliation, but you cannot understand one word of this announcement because of the speaker's strong accent or speech impediment.

F. You are working at the reception desk. You know that the client who has just arrived will have to wait for half an hour to see her lawyer as he has just called to say he has been delayed in court.

G. You have been staying late 2 to 3 nights a week over the past month to assist the senior partner, for whom you do not work, with his transcription overload. You have not been paid for your time. In fact, you did not discuss the matter of remuneration. You have been working at the firm for only two months.
