I chose to focus my attention on Eleanor Roosevelt for the historical leadership assignment. As the First Lady from 1939-1945, she pursued her passion for social justice--advocacy for progress in education, racial/gender equality, and poverty in the United States. During WWII, Roosevelt was actively involved in efforts to aid the U.S. and its allies through endorsement of the rationing system and programs such as the American Fat Salvage Committee which used grease and fats to make bombs. This involvement allowed her to motivate constituents to join in the causes for the greater picture: winning the war. Her endorsement of these programs and the use of "the powers of persuasion" to carpool, work factory jobs, keep chickens for eggs, grow crops, and feed scraps to livestock allowed the American people to feel that they had a genuine impact on how the war would be won--and on a larger scale, it did! She was often referred to as the "First Lady on the Front Lines" because of her visits to active-duty troops away from the mainland. Because of this, she is widely revered as one of the most influential and inspiring First Ladies.
