I faced an obstacle when graduating from 8th grade and had to decide what school I wanted to attend for high school. I was considered intelligent and was able to attend a magnet school. I only wanted to apply to my best friend's high school. However, my mom said no because she thought enrolling in one of the magnet schools on the list was best. My mom and I did research together, and I tried to pick schools I thought might have an area I would be interested in. I chose five and waited. The first two schools I was chosen for seemed too much because I was dealing with my mental illness then, so I passed on them. Then Terra Environmental accepted me, and I agreed. For the first year and a half, it was a considerable challenge. The school was more science and math based, and I wanted to do more writing since I wanted to do that in my career. Also, the work was so overwhelming that I didn't have time for anything else and missed many therapy sessions. After a year and a half, I faced another challenge: whether to leave or stay. I decided to leave and transfer to Florida Virtual School instead because they had more subjects I was interested in. There was confirmation bias. I wanted to apply to the same school as my best friend because even though it was not the right fit for me and what I needed to accomplish in my high school years, the fact that my friend was enrolled there was good enough for me, and the other schools would be wrong. That was the impression I got. In choosing the high school I needed to attend, I used counterproductive heuristics as I needed to be in the right mindset and had to choose five options quickly. I tried to pick out schools I thought would please my mom, even though I did not want them. Then I struggled with the final school that I did attend. Also, overconfidence was at play. Even though my mom and I researched five different schools, I believed none would be worth applying to. However, I realized I had no other choice and chose Terra because they had an intriguing environmental program at the time. Because even though I liked writing, working alongside with animals and doing research would be fun, and I would do excellent at it. It was not until I started and realized how challenging it was that I was wrong. I overcame the obstacle by realizing that Terra was not a good fit. I took the time to research other options with my mom and did not focus on applying to the same school as my friend. Instead, I focused on what was most suitable for my future. I was more involved with choosing what I wanted, such as taking writing classes.
