NAAQS were established for six principal pollutants. Describe each and give examples of each applicable pollutant. (25 points) National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for wide-spread pollutants from numerous and diverse sources considered harmful to public health and the environment. The six principal pollutants are: Carbon Monoxide (CO) - An example of carbon monoxide is the urban smog typically seen in the Lake Michigan area, parts of the Southeast, and a few areas in California. Lead (Pb) - Most examples of use were discontinued in the 80's. The EPA and its federal partners phased out lead in gasoline, reduced lead in drinking water and banned or limited lead use in consumer products like paint. Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) - Nitrogen dioxide is dispersed from engines Ozone (O3) - Some examples of the ozone are the emissions from industrial facilities and electric utilities, motor vehicle exhaust, and chemical solvents. Particulate Matter (PM) - Examples include sand, hair, dust, dirt, soot, soil, and smoke Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) - Most SO2 comes from fossil fuel combustion at power plants and other industrial facilities. Smaller doses can be found when extracting metal from ore, and burning high sulfur containing fuels by large ships, and non-road equipment. As the chief of operations in your organization, you are responsible for presenting the yearly budget for the semi- trucks in your company's inventory. Since your safety officer is insisting that each of your drivers must maintain an average speed of 55mph, what would be the vehicle operating cost of your company for each semi-truck in cent per mile? ____(25 points) VOC= a0-a1s+a2s2 VOC=38.1-.093*55+.00033(55)2 VOC=38.1-.093=38.007 38.007*55=2090.385 2090.385 + .00033=2090.38533 2090.38533*552 = A taxi driver plans to pick you up at the airport and drop you off at the bank so you can complete some financial transaction before you head home. He notes that the change in vehicle operating cost (VOC) is 42 cents per mile. Given that his fuel consumption per minute is 0.2, what is the approximate price of fuel for this given arrangement if you delayed the driver for 48 minutes at the bank? ____(25 points) VOC= a0-a1s+a2s2 VOC= .2*48=9.6 gallons 9.6 gallons The simple interest for buying a passenger transit rail is shown as the product of the principle, time (in years), and annual rate. The City of Phoenix plans to buy five additional mass transit cars for $15 million, and pay off their loan in 10 years.
