I live on a steep hill, always seems colder than the rest of the city, and gets very icy when it snows. When it snows, we are trapped for a long time. In this problem you will help me decide if it is reasonable to try de-icing the iciest and steepest section of the hill.
Deicing agent: calcium magnesium acetate, CaMg(C2H3O2)4 I can't use a chloride compound like NaCl because I live near a salmon watershed, and if my deicing salt washed into the creek (which it definitely would) the chloride would damage the ecosystem.
Useful info about this hill and snow:
The area I want to be free of ice is 100 square feet. And lets assume we get a really bad snowfall, 6 inches! This will be a mass of 288kg of snow.
Snow (water) has a KF value of 1.86Cm
Water has a freezing point of 0C
Assume in a snowstorm in Seattle I expect temperatures to get as low as -10C and I need the de-icing agent to prevent freezing down to that temperature.
Use the information provided above to help me answer the question: what mass of calcium magnesium acetate do I need to lower the freezing point of 288kg of snow (water) to -10C? Is it worth it to try to de-ice the road or should I just stay put and enjoy sledding on the hill and cancel classes for a week? Your answer should be formatted as a scientific argument (a claim supported with evidence and explained with scientific reasoning). Show all work for calculations.
