About a year ago I worked with a company that is involved in selling life insurance and securities and did very well. It is considered a hybrid company because it encourages representatives to sell and to actively recruit people to become field agents which is referred to multilevel marketing (MLM). MLM is a networking marketing which is the practice of distributing, selling, or suppling products or services through independent contractors. The term MLM alone has an unethical implication because of negative recruiting and compensation practices, called pyramid schemes. Pyramid schemes ask people to invest for the opportunity to recruit others and are illegal because they are recruiting only rather than product center business (Koehn, 2001). Another challenge with MLM is that it encourages new recruits to sell or recruit family and friends which sometime strain relationship due to the pressures by the recruit to succeed at their new MLM business. The courts are well aware of the potential ethical dilemmas and imposed certain criteria that MLM must meet to be considered legitimate: (1) ensuring agents are really making retail sales, (2) company have buy-back policies, (3) low upfront fees, (4) make MLM activities voluntary (Koehn, 2001). I personally believe MLM is a great thing but only when the company's policy and the individual practice honesty both in recruiting and selling. The company I work with was no exception when it came to negative recruiting practices by rogue field agents. The company provides clear guidelines and enforced fair and honest treatment of their clients, and honest sales, some of the best I have ever seen, but lacked clear ethical guidance when it came to MLM practices. Three mission statement focus on product service but not for growing individual businesses. The absence of a mission statement regarding recruiting practices essentially promotes unethical recruiting practices (Johnson, 2019). Efforts by representatives (recruiters) in the company tend to state the possibilities of individual success in the company and not the actual success the individual is likely to experience. Understandingly, to state the actual success would deter likely successful candidates from even trying MLM, attrition rate is high. In addition, the company I'm referring to has a 31-page code of ethics, written by the Chief Compliance and Risk Officer and backed by the Board of Directors that thoroughly provides ethical guidelines with respect to securities, life insurance, vendor relations, fair treatment of employees (corporate office), and so on. Since recruiting field agents is the bed rock of expanding the company, I search recruiting, hiring, and prospecting and I did not find anything. Unfortunately for this company you can search tones of negative videos and posting that, in my opinion, diminishes the company's ability to really help clients achieve financial success. Nevertheless, in regards to recruiting, I think creating a mission statements, including field agent recruiting practices in the ethical guideline, and enforcement them would ensure representatives would engage in honest recruiting practices and possibly change the impression people have about companies that build with MLM. Engage leadership should give attention to these measures, field offices when then adopt these priorities, ensure recruiting practices remain fair and honest. Right now, the company provides bonuses to field agents that develop their new recruits to become successful but don't reward them for how they do it. I think the company should allocate its resources and reward fair and ethical recruiting and developing standards. I always say that Jesus operated the first MLM as it we know it. He recruited disciples who then recruited more by sharing the good news about God's love and salvation. When Jesus first started his ministry, John the Baptist disciples followed Christ who then told family and friends (MLM recruiting 101) the Messiah had come (King James Bible, 1769/2001,John 1:37 - 51). Jesus and the disciples share the good news of a new life, "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning" (King James Bible, 1769/2001,James 1:17). People today actively evangelize (recruit) hoping to win souls for the Kingdom of God but often garner more no's than yes because of negative perception created by unethical practices in the church. You can even find organizations, negative videos, and comments that, in my opinion, diminish our ability to influence change against the growing number of issues like abortion, sex orientations, racial issues, and government practices. How we react to these issue sends a message about our values and beliefs (Johnson, 2019). For example, if we react to individuals that strongly support same sex orientation in a loving way instead of shutting down the conversation with biblical scriptures, people may begin to see positive Christian values.
