I need comments on this article Tools: If the author suggests that there may be errors, is the tool or tools selected appropriate for the potential error being discussed? If the author found no evidence of statistical error, have all four tools been used sufficiently to make a cogent argument for the article properly representing the data. Data: Based on what we have learned in this class so far and your reading of the article, does the article properly represent the data (using section 1.6 criteria)? Analysis: Do you agree with the author's findings - whether the article appears to have errors or appears to be error free?

 

I chose an article about FedEx, something everyone in Memphis probably know about, and I work at in Indianapolis. I found a third party website, that was reporting on the statistics of FedEx's operation. The first thing that jumped out to me, was a section called editors choice. This area is a selective list of quick facts, with key points bolded to jump out at you This pulls the eye away from the full statement and focuses on the impressive number listed. When taking the time to read the full statements, we can see the language used should be questioned. The "almost" is used quite frequently. This allows, in my opinion for the numbers to be "fudged" or that non confirmed information can be used. With in this section we also see the use of the word Average. This was referenced directly in Dr. Targett's book, as a misleading word. The statement in question is "The average employee at FedEx makes $35274 annually". As in Targett's example, would the average person question what level of salaries are being averaged. Would this be the salary of the frontline worker, or seasoned managers that have worked for years, accruing raises. Continuing in the article we start to see graphs being used to show the sheer magnitude FedEx's business. The graph that I found misleading was for FedEx Express international Daily Packages. This graph has two statistics being compared from 2017 through 2022. Though the numbers being compared are two of FedEx's services not competing companies. It compares International Domestic and Export shipments. Though a casual glance could give the impression FedEx far exceeds its competitors in International Daily Packages. Article offers an overwhelming amount of data pulled from various sources, except FedEx itself. It is just regurgitating information from other web articles.
