ACE's, or adverse childhood experiences can alter people's life even into adulthood. After studying 240 police officers it was found that police reported a higher number of ACE's at a mean of 1.6 per officer, compared to the rest of the population. Not only that, but they're also exposed to ACE's in their line of work. 14.2% of police officers suffer from PTSD, caused by either exposure to ACE's, or their own previous ACE's. "Parental divorce was the most prevalent type of ACE reported by police (38.3%). As adults, officers exposed to parents' divorce may have more difficulty dealing with stress, regulating emotions in times of strife and internalizing problems." (Violanti, J. M., Mnatsakanova, A., Gu, J. K., Service, S., & Andrew, M. E., 2021) This quote is significant because it supports my argument as to why police officers can exhibit violence due to their mental health. This article gives me actual data from a study preformed on real police officers. I will reference this article throughout my paper in order to expand on the idea that a police officer's past trauma can drastically impact their attitude on duty.
