5.2.10 The proportion of brown M&M's in a milk chocolate packet is approximately 14% (Madison, 2013). Suppose a package of M&M's typically contains 52 M&M's. a.) State the random variable. Answer: Number of brown M&M's in a milk chocolate packet. b.) Argue that this is a binomial experiment Answer: It is a binomial experiment because you have 52 M&M's that can either be brown or not brown. There exists a fixed number of independent trials (the 52 M&M's), and each has two possible outcomes (Brown or not brown). Therefore it can be argued that this experiment is binomial. Find the probability that C.) Six M&M's are brown. Answer: d.) Twenty-five M&M's are brown. e.) All of the M&M's are brown. f.) Would it be unusual for a package to have only brown M&M's? If this were to happen, what would you think is the reason? Answer: That would be highly unusual since the probability of all M&M's being brown is close to 0. If it were to happen then I would say that either there was a packaging mistake, Ive experienced an extremely rare event, or that the percentage given to us (the 14% from Madison 2013) was very wrong. 5.3.4 Approximately 10% of all people are left-handed. Consider a grouping of fifteen people. a.) State the random variable. Answer: The number of left-handed people. b.) Write the probability distribution. c.) Draw a histogram. d.) Describe the shape of the histogram. e.) Find the mean. 15x0.1=1.5 Answer: 1.5 f.) Find the variance. n x p(1 -p) = 15 x .1(1 -.1) = 1.35 Answer: 1.35 g.) Find the standard deviation. Vn x p(1 - p) = V1.35 = 1.1619 Answer: 1.1619
