Abstract

The purpose of this replication study was to examine the effects of an interdependent group contingency on cell phone use during class/study sessions for four online graduate students using an interdependent group contingency. The in-person class format of the original study was modified due to the nature of the current class's asynchronous online format. An ABAB reversal design was used to test the interdependent group contingency on the entire class and individually for the four students. Results showed a reduction in cell phone use when the contingency was in place for the individuals and as a class. These findings suggest an interdependent group contingency may be effective at reducing cell phone use in class/study sessions.

• During second baseline phase, there was an increase of phone usage. Phone usage was at a mean of 46.6% of intervals with a range of 83%
• Last/final intervention phase, 3.4% of phone usage and a range of 17%
• The Changes in the levels do not show a functional relationship between baseline and the group contingency phase.

Jessica's results:

• During the initial baseline session, Jessica used her phone 46.6 % of the intervals (range, 33%-50%)
• First intervention phase, 0% usage.
• Returning to baseline, resulted in an immediate and stable increase of Jessica's cell phone use. Her mean total increased to 35.8% (range, 33%-50%).
• Reinstating the interdependent group contingency had an abrupt impact on her cell phone usage, returning her phone usage again to 0%.
• The immediate and abrupt changes in level that occurred across conditions with no overlapping data points support a functional relationship between the intervention and reduced cell phone usage in class.

Hanna's results:

• During the initial baseline phase, Hannah used her cell phone for a mean of 66.7% of intervals (range, 50%-83.3%).
• First intervention phase, 0% of phone usage
• During second baseline phase, immediate increase of phone usage. Phone usage was at a mean of 70% of intervals (range, 33.3%-100%)
• Last/final intervention phase, 0% of phone usage again.
• The abrupt changes of phone usage from baseline phases to intervention phases, show that the intervention of IGC is significant and supports a functional relationship.
