The analysis (100 points) needs to be submitted as a PDF file through the lab #1 blackboard assignment portal (inside "Lab Materials"). Any lab sent to the instructor's email will be viewed as not turned in and recorded with a grade of zero; the instructor will not be giving feedback on drafts of the lab. A portion of your grade is for overall presentation which includes following instructions, using complete sentences, correct spellings, and no typos; you should view your completed lab as a formal document.

PART A:

Determine the relative frequencies and percentages for the favorite spectator sport data. (40 pts) When constructing your 3-column table, be sure to include column headings (Favorite Spectator Sport, Relative Frequency, Percentage) and an appropriate title for the table; relative frequencies are to be rounded to three decimal places; percentages are to be expressed to the nearest tenth of a percent; include "%" with each percentage value. [NOTE: One way to check your calculations is to recall that your column of percentages should total 100% or close as discussed in lecture 2A which discusses relative frequency and percentage calculations.]

PART B:

ALL your responses in part B are to use complete sentences . (60 pts) Your responses need to reference the question, that is, your responses need to stand alone without the question (do not repeat a question ahead of your response). Your format should include the question number followed by the respective response; do not combine responses to questions.

(1) Which chart do you prefer -- the bar chart or the pie chart - for displaying this information gathered on the favorite spectator sport of students in three sections of math 165? (NOTE - You must make a choice and your response needs to be a complete sentence; the reasons for your choice are handled in the next question.)

(2) Why do you prefer the chart you indicated in question one? In your explanation, be specific, giving at least 2 distinct reasons. Phrases, such as, "easy to read" or "easy to understand" are too vague and too subjective; you need to explain in detail why the chart is "easy to read" and/or why the chart is "easy to understand" by referencing features of the chosen chart. In explaining why you prefer a chart you may discuss what you dislike about the other chart.

(3) Students in 3 statistics classes at MCC in a past semester were asked to indicate their favorite spectator sport. What does the chart you selected in question one tell you about the favorite spectator sport of students in the three classes? Be specific (as demonstrated below), giving 3 DIFFERENT facts that you learned from the preferred chart; each fact needs to reference numbers.

For example: If you were discussing the favorite season of students in these three classes, three different specific facts would be (1) the most preferred season is summer with 32 students, (2) 14 students chose spring as their favorite season, and (3) 7 students indicated winter was their favorite season. A nonspecific fact (and worth no points on the assignment) would be to say the chart shows the favorite season of 75 students in three classes of math 165 in a past semester at MCC. [NOTE: This information used for demonstration purposes is referenced in lecture 3C about Lab #1.]
