Your assignment...Is your philosophy of education which is a statement (or set of statements) that identifies and clarifies your beliefs, values, and understandings of an individual or group with respect to education? Defined in this sense, it may be thought of as a more-or-less organized body of your knowledge and opinion on education, both as it is conceptualized and as it will be practiced. A philosophy of this sort is critical in defining and directing the purposes, and objectives, and maintaining your focus as an educator. Hopefully, it will inspire and direct your educational planning, and processes in any given setting.

Why does it matter? A clear educational philosophy seeks to identify broader, often implicit, principles, and themes that are not necessarily exemplified in the school's or district's documents but are consistent with the beliefs and values that define and focus the vision and mission. When the time comes and it will, when you question what it is you are doing, I want you to read this assignment and dig below the surface to recall and understand the values that defined and directed your writing of it.

How is a philosophy implemented? Your students: Have bodies, and you must attend to their physical nature, sexuality, gender, and activity orbehavior in the natural world. They have minds, and you must consider their thinking and reasoning, both in structure and content. They have feelings, and you must recognize and be sensitive to these feelings and the attitudes that go with them in teaching and learning. They have wills, and you must recognize the intentions, judgments, and decisions of persons upon which they act. These lead to an inquiry into responsibility, accountability, and integrity. They are in communities and networks of care and responsibility with concerns for righteousness and justice in life. They have intuition and aspects of character, personality, imagination, and values, which transcend our analytic categories. You will be called to recognize the individuality and uniqueness of persons.
