I need help reaponding to this observation assignment by Alicia. i just need a response to this observation study.
My observation was done on a 6 year old female. Below are her drawings of self and her family.
In this photo she draws herself. As she drew I asked her some questions.
Me-'How would you describe yourself?'
Her- 'I'm very nice'
Me-'How are you nice?'
Her-'As a good friend. A nice person.'
Me-'How do you think you look?'
Her-'I look really nice.'
Me-'What is nice to you?'
Her-'Nice people are very...doesn't hurt people and is kind to friends.'
Me-'What makes a good friend?'
Her-'Because they give me stuff and let me play with them.'
This photo depicts her holding her 4 year old brother, standing next to her mother and father. Her grandparents are in the family car. Above the car she wrote 'grandpa/grandma'
She mentioned giving herself pink eyes and her brother brown. I asked why she did this and she replied, 'Cause it was easier.'
At this point I could tell she was enjoying the coloring more than the talking so I asked her why she didn't like the questions.
Her-'Talking is unusual, so I'm scared. Drawing is easy.'
I had told her this was for school and she said 'I try to help.' which I said she had done a great job.
She saw where I was taking notes and wrote one of her own.
'Very beautiful.'
For her age, she seems to be on track for her development of sense of self. According to the textbook, 'When they are 5 to 7 years old, children describe themselves in terms of their competencies'(Parke & Clarke-Stewart, 2014, pg 158). Though she focused on nice a lot, her description of self was a complete though. When asked to elaborate on her definition of nice especially when it comes to friends she gave a clear example of how she perceives niceness and a good friend. Her picture is telling as well, seeing as how every other person is next to her, except for her younger brother. It gives a bit of insight into her thinking, that her brother is always 'on' or 'with' her. Though her hair is dark brown she drew it pink like her favorite color same as the eyes. She does express a great deall of high self esteem, there was no negative comments about herself only positive like being nice and a good friend and even writing that she is beautiful. I have spent a lot of time with her, not just for observation but in normal every day life. I have watched her at dance class and a recital. She performs with confidence and personality. She will follow the steps exactly as taught, but when given freedom to put her own spin on something she goes at it with her all. She expresses a great deal of security in her own self as she feels safe in herself and her environment to perform as such.
