Intimacy refers to feelings of closeness or bond. Passion is defined to drive that leads to romance or physical attraction. Commitment or decision refers to the short-term decision to love and the long-term commitment to remain in love. There are different types of love that represent how relationships can vary on these components. Nonlove is when none of the components exist. Liking or friendship consists of only intimacy. Infatuation only consists of the passion component. Lastly, empty love refers to when only the commitment is present.

According to this theory, people weigh the potential benefits and risks of their social relationships. When the risk outweighs the rewards, the individual will terminate or abandon the relationship. The purpose of this exchange is to maximize benefits and minimize costs. Most relationships are made up of a certain amount of give and take, but this does not mean that they're always equal. Social exchange suggests that it is the valuing of the benefits and costs of relationships that determine whether or not we choose to continue a social association. One common example of social exchange theory is being asked on a date. If you feel that there are more pros than cons, or you feel like the benefit outweighs the cost, you are more likely to say yes. Conversely, if the costs outweigh the benefits you'll likely say no. This theory of social interaction has been used across other fields including economics, sociology, and psychology.
