Open the simulation at https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/forces-1d

1-Click on the friction tab. In the simulation, check all squares (Forces, Sum of forces, Values, Masses, and speed)

2- Before any force is applied, what is the sum of the forces on the object?

3- Move the friction button to none.

4- Input 50N for the applied force. What do you notice about the magnitude of the friction force (left/red arrow) when compared to the applied force (right/blue arrow)?

5- Input 100 N for the applied force. What do you notice about the magnitude of the friction force when compared to the applied force? Did it increase to exactly cancel the applied force? Is this consistent with what we learned?

6- Continue to increase the forces by approximately 50 Newtons until the object starts to move. What do you notice about the magnitude of the applied force and the friction force? The speed? Why did the object start to move at one force but not the others?

7- Now increase the friction button to midway between none and lots. Repeat steps 4 & 5.

8- Now increase the friction button to lots and repeat steps 4 and 5.

9- Using M = 200 kg, g = 9.8 m/s2, calculate the coefficient of static friction:

10- Use Newton's second law: Fnet = ma to calculate the coefficient of kinetic friction. You'll need to pick a force that makes the object move, once the object starts to move, time it for approximately 10 seconds using your watch or timer on your cell phone. At the end of 10 seconds record the speed (you'll get the speed from the simulation).
