Discussion 2.1: Psychodynamic Therapy Critique
I did my evaluation on the psychodynamic role play with Dr. Todd Grande.
3. My reaction to the session was that it was productive in helping to dive deeper in to what may be causing Jasmine's anger. Jasmine was getting angry and frustrated very easily at things that would not normally upset her, such as her neighbors dog barking, or the cleaners putting her fianc's laundry together in a certain way. Dr. Grande was trying to make sure he understood by reiterating what Jasmine was saying to make sure he wasn't missing anything. However, even though the video showed to be productive, I am not sure the approach for Jasmine was the best. She was stating how easily annoyed she was getting at small things and almost had the police called on her. Dr. Grande kept repeating a lot of what Jasmine was saying and I would think that after a few times that would make her get frustrated as though he wan't listening and was continually repeating what she was saying. He may have continued this way because her body language showed that she was relaxed and her arms weren't crossed and she did not raise her voice. I think it is important to make sure you understand what the other person is saying, but I felt that it may have been a little excessive in this video.
8. My experience of the viewed session was that it was a great learning tool on how to break down a situation or emotion to help get to the root cause of a potential problem. I think the session was a great start to figure out why Jasmine was getting so angry and then moving forward her and the therapist can discuss healthy ways to cope instead of yelling and getting angry. I also think it was helpful to see how calm the therapist was and it is important to have eye contact during therapy. I also found it insightful how the therapist used different techniques to get Jasmine to open up and talk. My greatest learning experience was that there are different ways to get information from clients and using different techniques give helpful insight. In the beginning Jasmine did not know why she was getting so frustrated, but as the conversation developed and finding out about her day to day and how she perceived certain words, it started to become clear where some, if not all, of the frustration was stemming from.
