I need help response to my peers.

1. Maria said? The bystander effect occurs when the likelihood of being helped in a situation decreases based on the amount of people present (Heinzen & Goodfriend, 2021). This could be in part due to a psychological phenomenon known as diffusion of responsibility. Diffusion of responsibility occurs when people feel less accountable in a group setting because they think other members of the group can/will take action (Heinzen & Goodfriend, 2021).

Knowing what I have learned about bystander intervention and diffusion of responsibility, if I needed help in an emergency I would make it very clear that I needed the help. This might clarify any confusion at to whether or not I needed help or had received any help from somebody else. Another way to get help might be asking for help from particular person, or a couple of people. When this is done, people may feel less likely to assume diffusion of responsibility and take action.

2. Marcus said? Before you begin to take action towards getting help, you need to find yourself in a situation that would call for assistance in front of a group of people. For example, you're walking alongside a busy road in New York when you suddenly get struck by a vehicle and you're in bad shape. Many people around you witness the incident but are reluctant to move under the assumption that someone else will stand first in their place. The larger the crowd, the more likely every individual is to think there is more opportunities for someone else to move first. Some obstacles to helping could be to single an individual out of the crowd either by making direct eye contact or pointing them out. Another good tactic is to delegate the work. People will be more inclined to work if they see they aren't putting the entirety of the situation on themselves. Or seeing that they are a part of a larger picture will make them more willing to commit to their role.
