Physics 1154: Lab Practical This is your final lab practical. In your groups, you will design and conduct an observation experiment to answer the research question provided. You may work as a team on acquiring the design and data acquisition, but you will be turning in individual lab reports. Look back at your old reports for help. Experiment reports will be graded using scientific ability rubrics. To help you know what we expect, the rubric criteria are included. Use the Observation Experiment Report Template as a guide. Research Question: How does the period of a pendulum depend on its physical properties? A pendulum is a weight suspended from a pivot so that it can swing freely. Figure 1 shows a schematic diagram of a pendulum composed of a piece of string and an attached mass called a \"bob\". The string is attached to a fixed point on one end, and the bob on the other. When the pendulum points directly down (Position A, Figure 1), the pendulum is said to be in equilibrium. When the bob is displaced to position B (Figure 1) with a taut string and released, the bob will swing forwards and backwards as shown in Figure 1. Figure 1: A pendulum composed The time it takes to make a complete swinging motion (going of a piece of string and an attached mass called a "hob\" from point B to point C and then back to point B) is called the period. You are interested in what physical properties of the pendulum system affect the period for small displacements. Materials You may use the following materials, and ONLY these materials: * 1 mlength of string 5 pennies * sticky tape joLab You will need to answer the research question for at least two general physical properties of the pendulum system. The rubric used to assess your individual report is provided below. Observation Rubric (Final) Criteria Is able to identify the phenomenon to be investigated Is able to design a reliable experiment that investigates the phenomenon Is able to decide what physical quantities are to be measured and identify independent and dependent variables Ratings Pts 2 pts 1.5 pts 1 pts 0 pts Adequate Needs Inadequate Missing The phenomenon Improvement The description of the No to be investigated | The description of phenomenon to be phenomenon is 2 pts is clearly stated. the phenomenonis | investigated is confusing, = mentioned. vague or or it is not the incomplete. phenomena of interest. 2 pts 1.5 pts 1 pts 0 pts Adequate Needs Inadequate Missing The experiment might Improvement The experiment The experiment yield interesting Some important may not yield does not 2 pts patterns relevant to the | aspects of the any interesting investigate the investigation of the phenomenon will patterns phenomenon phenomenon not be observable 2 pts 1.5 pts 1 pts 0 pts Adequate Needs Improvement Inadequate Missing The physical quantities The physical Only some of The physical are relevant and quantities are physical guantities quantities independent and relevant. Is able to describe how to use available equipment to make measurements Is able to describe what is observed without trying to explain, both in words and by means of a picture of the experimental setup. Is able to identify the shortcomings in an experimental and suggest improvements 2 pts Adequate All chosen measurements can be made and all details of how it is done are clearly provided. 2 pts Adequate Clearly describes what happens in the experiments both verbally and with a sketch. Provides other representations when necessary (tables and graphs). 2 pts Adequate All major shortcomings of the experiment are identified and reasonable suggestions for improvement are made. 1.5 pts Needs Improvement All chosen measurements can be made, but the details of how it is done are vague or incomplete. 1.5 pts Needs Improvement A description is complete, but mixed up with explanations or pattern. The sketch is present but is difficult to understand. 1.5 pts Needs Improvement Not all aspects of the design are considered in terms of shortcomings or improvements. 1 pts Inadequate All chosen measurements can be made, but no details are given about how it is done. 1 pts Inadequate A description is incomplete. No labeled sketch is present. Or, adjusted to fit expectations. 1 pts Inadequate The shortcomings are described vaguely and no suggestions for improvements are made. 0 pts Missing At least one of the chosen measurements 2 pts cannot be made with the available equipment. 0 pts Missing No description is 2 pts mentioned. observations are 0 pts Missing No attempt is made to identify any shortcomings of the experimental. 2 pts Is able to identify a pattern in the data Is able to represent a pattern mathematically 2 pts Adequate The patterns represent the relevant trend in the data. When possible, the trend is described in words. 2 pts Adequate The expression represents the trend completely and an analysis of how well it agrees with the data is included. 1.5 pts Needs Improvement The pattern has minor errors or omissions. Terms proportional are used without clarity- is the proportionality linear, quadratic, etc. 1.5 pts Needs Improvement No analysis of how well the expression agrees with the data is included, or some features of the pattern are missing. 1 pts Inadequate The pattern described is irrelevant or inconsistent with the data 1 pts Inadequate The mathematical expression does not represent the trend. 0 pts Missing No attempt is made to search fora 2 pts pattern 0 pts Missing No attempt is made to represent a pattern 2 ptS mathematically Total Points: 16
