- Why do people Hate HR?
People hate HR for many reasons. " The human resources trade long ago proved itself, at best a necessary evil - and at worst, a dark bureaucratic force that blindly enforces nonsensical rules, resists creativity, and impedes constructive change." (Hammonds, pg. 42) The HR department's practices and work are essential, obsolete, or outdated. HR people are not considered to be very sharp or intelligent.
HR department stresses efficiency over valuable or quality work. One of the other main reasons why people hate HR is that it does not work for the company's employees. The Human Resources department does not acknowledge employees' accomplishments that are more valuable to an employee than a 4% base wage raise or bonus. Instead, HR is focused on benchmarking salaries. In other words, "Human Resources forfeits long term value for short term efficiency. (Hammonds, pg. 45) Human resources are generally stuck in a different time that must change to become more valuable for the company and its employees.
- What are five things HR Professionals do to help change the negative perception of HR? Which one do you believe is most important?
The five things that HR professionals do to help change the negative perception of HR are saying the right thing, measuring the right thing, getting rid of social workers, serving the business, and making value and not activity. The first one is saying the right thing; the HR department informs the employees of what the company wants and believes. Everything must be clearly stated why especially regarding pay. The second thing is measuring the right thing. This states that HR should not measure only how many people it hires and trains. Instead, it should measure what the employees took from that training.
The third is getting rid of social workers. Human resources should not only worry about cutting costs but should focus on making sure its people are technically competent and sophisticated about the company's strategy, competitors, and customers. (Hammonds, pg. 46) The fourth is serving the business. HR should back its employees to improve the company's capability. The last thing is that HR should create value.
The most important one is making value and not just activity. This wraps up most of the responsibilities of the HR department. When HR focuses on making value, the company can execute a strategy and build relationship customer relationships to create confidence among investors in the firm's future value.
- Based on your experiences and what you read in the article, what do you think about HR? Please explain.
So far, I did not have any problems or conflicts with the HR department at my job. They are adorable and willing to answer any question that I have. However, they can add more value. The HR department should generally update its cresponsibilitiesites because they are outdated.
