The purpose of this assignment is to enhance your understanding of severe weather through analysis and interpretation of data relating to the Angus tornado. Data Analysis and Interpretation: 1. Regarding the Angus tornado: a. Distinguish between weather warnings and watches. Illustrate the distinction using the Angus tornado. b. Locate this tornado in terms of date, time and place. Cite your source(s) as necessary. c. Was Earth's atmosphere predisposed towards severe weather on this day, at this place? Convective Available Potential Energy (CAPE) provides an indication. Review the sounding data available from the online repository to estimate the value of CAPE just prior to the occurrence of the Angus tornado. d. Was precipitation observed? If so: i. State types (e.g., hail) of precipitation observed. Cite your source(s) as necessary. ii. Classify this precipitation in terms of duration/intensity/area see 3D diagram below. e. Was lightning observed? Cite your source(s) as necessary. i. Suppose lightning was observed in Angus, and that you had a clear line of sight from York University to it. How long would it take for you to hear 2. 3. 4. 5. the thunder corresponding to the Angus lightning? State any assumptions required for this estimation. f. With which type of thunderstorm was this tornado associated? Cite your source(s) as necessary. g. Illustrate the tornado itself. For example, share a link to a photograph, video or radar image. Cite your source(s) as necessary. i. From your illustration, is it possible to quantify the size of the tornado relative to its associated thunderstorm? h. Quantify the intensity of the tornado. Cite your source(s) as necessary. i. Illustrate the impact of the tornado. For example, share a link to a photograph or video. Cite your source(s) as necessary. Global News has compiled of the mostimpactful tornadoes in Ontario. a list a. Using Google Maps (or similar), locate these tornadoes on a map. If possible, use an encoding scheme to indicate the intensity of the tornado. (You could, for example, use color and/or size to encode intensity.) b. Add the location of the Angus tornado to this compilation. i. Consider Figure 14.24 from your AJJ textbook (Slide 36 of the Thunderstorms and Tornadoes lecture ). Is there anything exceptional regarding the occurrence of the event in Angus? ii. Consider Figure 14.25 from your AJJ textbook (Slide 37 of the Thunderstorms and Tornadoes lecture ). Is there anything exceptional regarding lake breezes and the event in Angus? What makes tornadoes so difficult to observe? What makes tornadoes so difficult to predict? How might the intensity and/or frequency of Ontario tornadoes be modified if the planet continues to warm? Before answering, please read this article .
