"Coby is a 21-year-old athletics coach who, having been forced to retire from a promising career as a sprinter due to injury, started to coach the under-15 sprint squad at his former club in Cardiff.
Coby found working with the younger age groups quite 'easy' - he felt connected to them because of his own relatively young age and had lots of things in common with them, such as similar tastes in music and hobbies such as gaming. The young athletes would often comment on how approachable they felt Coby was - they could trust him and would often share issues they were facing not only with their sprint training and development but also things going on at school and in their home life.
The young athletes also saw Coby as a leader and role model - they learned from his own sprinting experiences and his coaching was leading to improvements in their performances. They all felt 'on the same page' about their short, medium and long-term goals. As an athlete, Coby sometimes felt that his coaches didn't always see him as a priority, and they came and went quite regularly. Because of this, he tried to always be there for his young sprinters and supported them consistently through their performance high and low points.
During this time Coby had progressed through his coaching qualifications and, at the age of 23, was offered a paid role with Welsh Athletics. His first assignment was to support Rhys, a 31-year-old 200-metre sprinter who was approaching the end of his career - but running times faster than ever before.
It soon became apparent that Coby and Rhys weren't particularly getting along, and tensions emerged between them. Rhys would often design his own training drills and demand that Coby follow his directions and requirements, saying Coby 'didn't have a clue'. Although Coby tried to get to know Rhys and build up a rapport, Rhys was often cold, abrupt and would comment on how 'different' they were as people.
It wasn't long before Coby started to show signs of wanting to move on from working with Rhys and find another coaching opportunity. They would accuse each other of not recognising their efforts - for example, Coby not appreciating Rhys' training commitment and Rhys regularly accusing Coby of not supporting him, particularly after disappointing performances. While Coby saw a number of positive developments in such races (e.g., faster starts, cleaner running form), Rhys disagreed that any of these factors should matter if the performance wasn't improving. Training sessions would usually end with Rhys and Coby 'agreeing to disagree' and before long Coby requested a change of athlete with his line manager at Welsh Athletics."
