Q: State an example of a variable that follows a normal distribution.State one way knowing this is useful in your professional or personal life.Briefly elaborate on your example.

A: One variable that follows a normal distribution is fasting blood sugar or glucose levels. According to the Mayo Clinic (n.d.), a fasting blood sugar level of less than 100mg is normal. Levels from 100-125 are considered prediabetes, and levels of 126mg or higher on two separate tests indicate diabetes.

Statistically, if a random group of individuals had their blood sugar levels tested, the mean would fall around 100mg. However, some of the individual's levels may be higher or lower. The data distribution would be single-peaked as the mode would be the average readings of the glucose levels. The data distribution would be symmetric because the mean and median would be close to normal with higher or lower variations. This data would also be bell-shaped, indicative of a normal distribution. According to Bennett et al. (2017), data values that result from genetic and environmental factors are usually normal distributions.

If a person has been diagnosed with diabetes, this information is vital for monitoring to ensure blood sugar levels remain within the target range. This information is helpful in my personal life as I have close relatives that have diabetes, and this fact is considered a risk factor for the disease. Knowing the normal distribution of the range of blood sugar levels is essential because extreme deviations may indicate a severe problem. People with diabetes need to know this information when monitoring their blood sugar levels throughout the day.
