On the other hand, a service company provides provision of services which are not tangible. This forms the main difference between the manufacturing and services environments. An example of a manufacturing company is General Electric. General Electric is known as of one of the best run and successful manufacturing companies in the United States. The company develops and manufactures products for the generation, transmission, distribution, control and utilisation of electricity. The company is also involved in production of aircraft engines, power generation and industry products. These functionalities are based on power, oil and gas, aviation and energy management. The oil and gas segment of the company deals with manufacturing equipment used in the whole process from drilling, pipes for transport and petrochemical plants construction. The energy sector provides products and systems that distribute, protect and control energy. The aviation sector on the other hand, produces sells and services turbo shaft engines and jet engines. These products are used in the military in such operations such as fighting, bombing and surveillance (Schaninger Jr, Harris & Niebuhr, 1999). Process mapping is usually mentioned as a key factor in the company's success. It is a link between a traditional process chart and a computer system flow chart and aids communication about processes and enables process improvement. If done properly, it offers a clear picture of what activities are carried out in the process. Effective process mapping helps to create an infrastructure of how companies organize employees and help to define their roles and responsibilities within the organization. For instance, the chart can be subdivided into goals, people, process and structure. This process helps to ensure that the company is on track in tackling issues within the organization, thus maximising performance and increasing the chance of the company achieving high performance (Stewart, 1992). Manufacturing & Service Industries At General Electric, the structure of operations is as follows. The employees get an opportunity to meet their managers. During this meeting, the manager takes charges of the team requesting them to solve a problem. The manager then leaves and allows them to look into the problem and come up with a solution(s) under the guidance of skilled outside facilitators. At the end of meeting the manager meets the group again and hears their recommendations. At this stage the directors are also invited to listen to the solutions. A decision is then made by the manager (yes or no) or that he or she will make a recommendation after further analyses. The idea is then shared with top management for further review and analysis (Stewart, 1992). The accumulation of activities taking place in a company can help determine a company's success. Processes must be analysed to ensure they support key business objectives. This method occurs at Walt Disney in which they refer to as a creative flow chart. This type of chart aids the creative process from story development to final edit (King, 1981). According to Jacka & Keller (2002) on the article on the creative flowchart used by Walt Disney, the managers task their employees to come up with a story based on a particular storyline. The creative team goes out and pieces up an interesting story that they present to Start the directors of the company (Jacka & Keller, 2002). They then present to the board which, if approved continues to the next step. If the story is not accepted, the team goes back to the drawing board and conducts additional research. While the manufacturing industry is greatly influenced by the methodology and approach used in production, the service industry is greatly affected by the quality of the services and the creativity in the company operations. This is the case seen in General Electric which depends on its high quality of manufactured products and efficient process mapping, while Walt Disney chiefly depends on creativity in production and high quality of service to its customers through an array of shows and rides. By having the deep understanding of the two environments, one will be able to work well in a diversified environment; a manufacturing or a service provided company. This understanding can help to ensure that there is no confusion on the flow of activities as Manufacturing & Service Industries knowledge will be sufficient. Understanding both environments also enables one to offer the best services to the customers. For instance, by understanding where the customer variability comes from in both scenarios, one will be able to offer the assistance needed appropriately. Understanding all the processes will enable the smooth flow of goods as well as services. For instance, learning of the sensitive areas of production will increase the keenness of the employee in order to avoid costly mistakes for the company (Beuth, et al. 2013). A clear understanding could also provide an opportunity for one to advance in their career. This will be useful in increasing one's skills and knowledge further and thus enhance competitiveness.
