The following pages contain the materials in the case file: an interview with the client and some text messages between the client and another employee of ABC Corporation. Transcript of interview with client Pippa Langsdale Partner: Good morning, Pippa, thanks for coming in today. Ms. Langsdale: Of course, it's my pleasure. P: I just wanted to go over what happened so I can assess your case. From what I understand, for many years you worked at ABC Corporation, right? Ms. L: Yes, that's right. The place was really male- dominated. They pack and ship big boxes of freight and most of the people who work there are manly-men. As a skinny young girl, I was really outnumbered. P: And you were a security guard there? Ms. L: Yep. So I was this tiny little girl in charge of keeping all these manly-men safe. But they gave me a gun so I was good. P: Were you the only security guard there? Ms. L: No! That's the whole problem - this other security guard. He patrolled a different area of the facility. He ruined my life. P: Ruined your life? Yikes what happened? Ms. L: Well, I had seen him in the facility but I didn't know him. Then he got my phone number from my roommate he was friends with her boyfriend -- and he suddenly started texting me, asking me out on dates. At first I was nice to him although I never said "yes," I always avoided a direct answer. But one day I finally I put my foot down and told him "no." Man you should see the text he sent me in response - totally vulgar. I still have it and I can show it to you. 7You'll see that he refers to a "copper, " he meant a fellow security guard. Guess that's what he called us guards - "coppers, " like cops. P: After he sent you that vulgar text, did he contact you again? MS. L: No. And when ran into him at work, he just ignored me. We didn't talk at all. P: This guy who texted you -- this was Eddie Coronado, right? Ms. L: Right. P: Was he your boss? Or your superior? Ms. L: Not really. He had been there for a few years longer than me, so he was more senior. And he was a trainer who would train new employees. But he never trained me. He was friendly with my boss, though. P: Who was your boss? Ms. L: Same as his boss -- the warehouse manager. He's above us all; but Coronado somehow had managed to develop a friendship with him. Made me sick - they would sit around talking for hours. P: Did other people bother you at work? Ms. L: Well I'm not done with Coronado. After we had that text exchange, he told people at work that I was a "slut" and a "whore." It was really humiliating. P: Really? How did you learn about that? Ms. L: One of my colleagues told me - another assistant. She said she was in the warehouse and she heard Coronado talking to a group of people and he said "Pippa is a real slut . Total whore, I've heard." P: That's awful. Did you confront him? Did you tell anyone in charge that he had done that? Ms. L: No, I kept it to myself. And I didn't talk to him about it. Honestly I just wanted to forget about the whole thing. P: So he never got into trouble for making those remarks about you? 8Ms. L: Actually he did. Apparently he made similar comments about another woman who works in the facility and she complained. They investigated and learned that he had made these kind of comments about me and two other women, and he was counseled or reprimanded or something. I'm not sure exactly what happened because management says it's "confidential, " but Coronado has complained to people that he "got into trouble" because of "the bitches" at work. So yeah he did eventually get into some kind of trouble, I think. P: So what else happened? My understanding is that you're not working there any more - how did your job end? Ms. L: That's what finally led me to call you. After the stupid texts from Coronado, I was working and I think I was doing a great job. But my boss - the warehouse manager - got mad at me one day because he couldn't find me anywhere and I didn't answer my cell phone. I had left for just a short time - like an hour - because my daughter needed something at school so I delivered it to her . And I had my phone on silent mode. Anyway my boss got really mad at me, he said it's very important - I think he said it's "imperative" - that I remain available to him while I'm at work. So he can find me and contact me any time I'm at work. He wrote me up for being unavailable even though it was just a short time. After that, things kinda soured between us - I could tell he wasn't happy with me. P: This reprimand, was this before or after management found out that Coronado had been disparaging you? MS. L: After. Coronado had already gotten into trouble by then. See that's why I think my boss got so mad at me - he's friends with Coronado so he was mad that I got him into trouble. : But you didn't get him into trouble, right? Didn't you say you never complained? Ms. L: Well, I never complained but it still came out, what he did. So I think my boss blamed me for it. Anyway, after the reprimand, things were strained between me and my boss. He just kept criticizing everything I did, felt like he was micromanaging me. Then one day he walked over to me and said "You're on desk duty the rest of the week." "Desk duty" means I have to sit at the 9main desk and answer all incoming calls and help anyone who needs assistance. It's an awful job, everyone hates it although everyone eventually has to do it. But I thought that was pretty suspicious timing - putting me on desk duty right after my reprimand for not being available. P : WOW. OK, so your troubles at work started with you getting these texts from Coronado. Then you got into trouble - you were reprimanded - because you were not available to your boss. Then your boss put you on desk duty. Is that correct? Ms. L: Yes. But the background of all this is that my boss seems to be friends with Coronado. I see them talking together all the time. So I think this is all related - my boss didn't like me because he knew that I had rejected Coronado. P: Wait, so you believe that your boss reprimanded you then put you on desk duty because he's friends with Coronado, so he was upset with you for rejecting Coronado? Ms. L: Yes, exactly. It all came to a head about two months ago, when he fired me. See, he was again trying to find me at work but he couldn't. I had left my cell phone at work, so he couldn't find me by calling or at work; but I was at lunch. I was at lunch with my boyfriend, but my boss didn't know. He was furious. He blew a gasket - and fired me on the spot. P: Wait, how does it work as far as lunch is concerned? Do you tell your boss when you're going to lunch or can you go to lunch any time? Ms. L: Any time. We're allowed to go to lunch any time, it's up to us, but we are supposed to notify him when we're leaving. Guess I didn't tell him. But it was my lunch hour! P: OK so you had all these bad interactions - the reprimand, the desk duty. Then one day you were to lunch but you didn't tell your boss you were going to lunch. He tried to find you but he couldn't and he also couldn't reach you via cell phone. So he fired you for that? For not being available? 10Ms. L: Yes, he told me that it's "imperative" that his employees remain available and accessible to him, and since I had twice ignored him and not been available he was firing me. P: That sounds very upsetting.
