Course Materials Required: -Accounting Information Systems, Gelinas, Dull and Wheeler, Tenth Edition, 2015 -Flowcharting Template -Free Accounting software on the Internet: Quickbooks Online Plus (to be used in your systems implementation project): http://quickbooksonline.intuit.com/finance-accounting-solutions/ Recommended: -Intermediate Accounting textbook Course Positioning in the Accounting Curriculum and the Profession Accounting Information Systems is a required course for the accounting major and should be taken after Intermediate 1 (ACCT3100). It contains material that will be useful in the upper division auditing course and the upper division advanced financial accounting course. Course Objectives 1.To review the fundamental accounting system and its place in organizational decision-making. 2.To develop a reasonable proficiency level in using tools to document information systems. 3.To understand the principles of internal control and their application in accounting system design. 4.To learn the operational and information functions of several major AIS subsystems (e.g., sales, accounts receivable, accounts payable, general ledger) and how those subsystems interface with one another. 5.To use an automated accounting system. Prerequisite ACCT 3100-Strictly enforced. Class Withdrawal See KSU Schedule of credit courses. 1 D2L In order to keep up with this course, you must access D2L for course notes, course handouts, discussion postings, and email. Further, D2L will be used to post grades. D2L is accessed at the following URL: http://d2l.kennesaw.edu From this location you should be able to find any information you need for logging into the system GRADE DETERMINATION AND GRADED ACTIVITIES Assignment Manual accounting problem 4 Examinations (150 points each) System Implementation Project (Team) Excel Demo and homework Participation, etc. Totals Points 25 600 250 100 25 1000 The grading scale is: A: 90-100% B: 80-89% C: 70-79% D: 60-69% F: Below 60% If you miss the cut off for the next highest grade by 10 or less points, the only way I will consider that you may have earned the higher is if the average of your exam grades is the higher grade. Final grades will be posted on D2L. The Manual Accounting Problem This problem is the first class assignment. You will complete a problem found on D2L and answer quiz questions about the problem also found on D2L. Please see the calendar below for the quiz due date. Examinations The examinations will consist of multiple choice questions, short answers, and problems. The examinations will be given as indicated by the calendar below. Please arrange your schedule accordingly. THERE ARE NO MAKE-UP EXAMS. If you have an acceptable excuse, then your final exam score will replace the grade on the midterm examination from which you were excused. There are only three acceptable excuses for missing an exam: serious personal illness, death in the family, or conflicting university activity. These excuses must be appropriately documented. Any excuse must be discussed with me prior to the missed exam. Any un-excused exam absence will result in a 0 for the exam. 2 System Implementation Project Teams of two students will complete the project. You may pick a partner with whom you will complete the project however, please choose your partner carefully: I am unsympathetic to complaints about a person that you selected. More information about the project will be provided later in the class. Please note for the due date for the system project is not flexible. Please consult the D2L calendar for the due date. If I do not receive your project by the due date you will receive a 0 for the project. Participation, politeness, attitude, attendance, etiquette Everyone starts with 25 points. You may lose points based on your classroom behavior, and not attending class. Regular class attendance is expected. Class participation is expected and will make the class more enjoyable. If you come to class, polite behavior is expected. Some places where students commonly lose points: Using cell phones in class, including \"texting\" Using the classroom computers for non-class related activities such as checking emails, doing course schedules, checking Facebook, shopping, etc. Walking in and out of class during the class session Not having the correct material for class, e.g., lecture notes and the correct edition of the textbook Interrupting the lecture or other students' comments without raising your hand Not being able to answer homework questions when I call on you Eye rolling, huffing, shrugging, smirking, etc. Being late for an exam Being unprepared for an exam (no pencil, no calculator, no flowchart template) Leaving an exam session for any reason If you miss class, it is your responsibility to contact other students to get the class notes or handouts. Do not ask me what we did in class, the reason we have class is so that the material is not explained to students one by one. These points are in place not only so the course content can be taught effectively, but also so that you can become better socialized citizens, and ultimately more employable. Many employers are complaining about newly graduated students' readiness to interact as professionals. Specific complaints from employers include inappropriate use of electronic media and general attitude problems. Important Attendance Note Students are solely responsible for managing their enrollment status in a class; nonattendance does not constitute a withdrawal. 3 NON GRADED ACTIVITIES Student Readings and Homework Reading assignments are to be read prior to the class period for which they are assigned. The textbook includes current event information in Technology Summaries, Excerpts and Applications. Note: Graded homework will be clearly identified in class, and we will go over many of the problems in class. Further, the exam questions will be based on the homework problems. D2L self-test for exam preparation There are 4 D2L self-tests. The purpose of the self-tests is to help prepare you for the exams. These are completely optional and do not count in your grade. MISCELLANEOUS Computer Use You need to be aware of and cope with the realities of working with computers. Sometimes the system goes down; sometimes the computersetworks are busy. Frequently computer assignments will take longer than you anticipate. The computer is not an acceptable excuse for missing or late work in this class. This will require that you plan ahead and not wait until the last minute to complete assignments. ACADEMIC HONESTY: Every KSU student is responsible for upholding the provisions of the Student Code of Conduct, as published in the Undergraduate and Graduate Catalogs. Section II of the Student Code of Conduct addresses the University's policy on academic honesty, including provisions regarding: plagiarism and cheating, unauthorized access to University materials, misrepresentation/falsification of University records or academic work, malicious removal, retention, or destruction of library materials, malicious/intentional misuse of computer facilities and/or services, and misuse of student identification cards. Incidents of alleged academic misconduct will be handled through the established procedures of the Department of Student Conduct and Academic Integrity (SCAI), which includes either an "informal" resolution by a faculty member, resulting in a grade adjustment, or a formal hearing procedure, which may subject a student to the Code of Conduct's minimum one semester suspension requirement.
