i) Step One: Clarify (Facilitator 1) The Issue: The Facilitator will write out the objective of the ideation session and will ensure that everyone is clear of the objective and their role. Criteria Assessment: With your group, come to a common agreement as to what the top five assessment criteria that will be used to assess what the ideas must do or be to be accepted. Complete the Criteria Assessment Form area for the five Criteria. The information to complete this is included in the case. iii) Step Two: Ideate Diverge Brainstorming: Facilitator 1 Facilitate your group be working through each of the four brainstorming guidelines starting with No Judgment, then build on ideas, then... Defer judgment: Start by simply asking for as many ideas as people can think of without judging their or others answers. The objective here is to "empty the mind" of all the participants ideas on this topic. Build on others ideas: Review the list of ideas captured in "No Judgment" and begin selecting ones that you think the group could build on to develop new or other ideas. Before moving on ask the group if there are any other ideas that they think they could build on. Wild Ideas: Ask for radical ideas. Encourage them to use their imagination and imagine a perfect solution, no matter how out there. If stuck, give them different roles to play and provide ideas from those roles (e.g. rock star, six year old, Gandhi, etc) Go for Quantity: In closing, ask each person to come up with one more idea. In total you should come with at least 50 ideas. Use Random Word: Facilitator 2 Get a Random word: Go anywhere-looking around, dictionary, newspaper-pick a simple random word (a noun is best, e.g. egg). Build Associations and attributes from the random word: List five to eight words or short descriptions that you associate with the random word (e.g. breakable, versatile, dozen, scrambled, etc) Generate Ideas: Force an association between each of the attributes in the previous step and your objective to come up with new and interesting ideas. Use the "stickies" (or if on the white board, use markers) for each member to vote on what they consider the top four ideas. 2. Complete the criteria assessment matrix rating sheet using these four ideas. Tally the vote and determine the top idea. If some of the ideas are close and it makes sense to combine them, do so. Next, Power Up the Idea: 1. Diverge with the group to get at least 5 additional supporting or sub ideas that really make your idea outstanding. Write out your Fully Developed Idea that includes these supporting ideas. Lastly, Assess the Idea 1. Identify/Diverge on all of the key strengths of this idea and pick the top three. 2. Identify/Diverge on all of the key Concerns of this idea and list the top two and come up with an idea to solve each of the two concerns. v) Implement: (Facilitator 4) What are the top 5 high-level action steps that you must do to implement the core solution? List them in chronological order. Assume that any market research supports your solution as is.
