Question 1 A centrifuge is a laboratory device that separates particles from a solution based on its density by applying centrifugal force. Basically, centrifuge works by using the principle of sedimentation under the influence of gravitational force. Aside from separating suspended particles in a mixture, centrifuge is commonly used to purify cells, subcellular organelles, viruses, proteins and nucleic acids. Although centrifuge usage is widespread, the selection of proper centrifuge tubes besides rotor system can often be a challenging experience. (i) Identify FOUR (4) important properties that are required in selecting polymer materials as conical centrifuge tubes. (20 Marks) (i) Choose ONE (1) type of polymer that is suitable to be used as conical centrifuge tubes for high-speed applications. Explain why the polymer type is selected. (20 Marks) (iii) Draw the repeat unit structure for the selected polymer material in Question 1 (ii). (5 Marks) (iv) Discuss ONE (1) processing method used to produce the conical centrifuge tubes. (25 Marks) Question 2 (1) Discuss THREE (3) applications of fiber-reinforced polymer composites in aerospace industry. (30 Marks)
