Question:
I went to visit my mother-in-law's house and there I saw her granddaughter, the girl is 3 and a half years old. I Observed the girl for about 15 to 17 minutes, this girl does not show interest in people, she does not talk much, the girl plays alone and all the time the girl is only using the tablet and so that she can follow her brother I could see he uses the tablet on his back so the girl can follow him, if I spoke to the girl it was like she wasn't listening but she listens well, when she doesn't like a video she changes it to another video. I could also notice that the girl started playing and threw some kitchen games on the floor and she didn't pick it up and fell and did not show any sign of pain or cry and remained silent. On the other hand, I saw that the girl climbs on the tables and they don't say anything to her and they let a little dog lick her. I also noticed that the parents don't give her much attention or talk to the girl, her parents were just using the cell phone and the girl using the tablet, I can say everyone is in their own world. Apart from observing her, my mother-in-law told me that they declared the girl autistic because she does not speak, but for me it is something very curious because their parents teach children little words depending on their age from a very young age so that they learn to speak and That girl I could notice that both parents do not teach her to speak they just give her a tablet.
- The first page of your paper should consist of your naturalistic observation notes, where you describe what you observed during the 15-minute observation.
- Next, discuss the setting in which you observed, noting the approximate age of the child, the child's gender, and the types of behaviors that you observed.
- Following this, choose three (3) behaviors that you find most interesting and use concepts and theories from the class to explain what you observed (e.g., Piaget's theory of cognitive development, Erikson's eight stages of psychosocial development, attachment theory, concepts in language development such as telegraphic speech, and more). For each behavior, describe the behavior you will be discussing, then describe the concept you will be using to explain the behavior. Be sure to state the importance of this concept or stage of human development. For instance, you may notice that a child is saying "Ba ba ba" and describe how they are in the babbling phase of language development. You may describe how babbling sets the stage for future language milestones such as telegraphic speech. Other examples of concepts you may discuss include parenting style, socioeconomic status, Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory (e.g., How does the child's microsystem affect them? How about interactions between the microsystem, mesosystem, etc.?) and more.
- Finally, include a section on how you think the child's culture influences one of the three behaviors you discussed. Culture is defined as the belief systems and value orientations that influence customs, norms, practices, and social institutions, including psychological processes (language, care taking practices, media, educational systems) and organizations (media, educational systems; (Fiske, Kitayama, Markus, & Nisbett, 1998). Please include at least one journal article for this section of the paper.
