The Supreme Court then decides which cases they will keep and which cases they will pass down to the court of appeals. The judges on the court of appeal are reviewing cases from the trial court to see if the decision was correct or if an error was made. Sometimes they can change the decision of the trial court judge and sometimes they just determine that an error was made and they send the case down to the trial court to fix. They issue written decisions that can either be published or non published but are available to the parties and the public.Supreme Court: The Supreme Court is the highest court in lowa. The Supreme Court then decides which cases they will keep and which cases they will pass down to the court of appeals. They generally will only keep cases that are cases of first impression (never been decided in lowa before) or cases with constitutional issues. They do keep other types of cases but the majority of the appeals are sent to the Court of appeal to be heard. The Supreme Court also presides over cases involving attorney misconduct and has the ability to suspend or revoke an attorney's license or to provide another punishment if they have violated the rules of ethics.
