Identify a Research Question that is suitable for survey research, and has an International Business Dimension. The question should be one sentence, and identify the Dependent Variable. The format for research questions is as follows:

"What factors are determine ?"

Examples: What factors determine Japanese people's passion for mochi ice cream? The Dependent Variable (DV) is passion for mochi ice cream)

What factors determine Belgians' attitude towards the USA? The DV is Belgians' attitude towards the USA

What factors determine San Francisco tourists' (older than 21 years) extent of preferences for international beer over domestic (American-made) beer? DV is amount (extent) of preference for international beer over domestic beer.

What factors determine the salaries of new graduates from the SF State MBA Program? DV is salaries of new graduates from the SF State MBA Program. 2. Create two testable hypotheses related to your dependent variable.. Use your research question response from 1., above, and create two hypotheses that test for different independent variables (IVs), but the same DV.

Create two directional (one-tailed) hypotheses of association. A hypothesis states a proposed relationship between an independent variable (IV) and the dependent variable. In a regression, for a given research project, we almost always have multiple IVs and one DV.

Examples of a positively-worded hypothesis from first bullet point in 1., above: H1: People with higher incomes have a greater passion for mochi ice cream than those with lower incomes.

This could also be stated (equivalently) H1: As people's income increases, passion for mochi ice cream increases.

or (also precisely equivalently)

H1: As people's income decreases, passion for mochi ice cream decreases The two hypotheses above this sentence are absolutely identical; they are NOT two separate hypootheses. Think about it. If one is true the other must be.

or (again, precisely equivalently)

H1: Income is positively associated with passion for mochi ice cream.

All the above testable hypotheses are ALL absolutely identical. You may choose which format you use. The only differences are the wording. It's a positively worded hypothesis (as the IV goes up, the DV goes up). A negatively worded hypothesis looks like this (as the IV increases, the DV decreases):

H2: As proximity of a person's home to a city decreases, their passion for mochi ice cream increases.

You choose which type of directional hypotheses of association you create: either positively worded or negatively worded, to build your understanding and experience. I suggest one of each, but this is not required.
