Identify at minimum five flaws in this study. Identify, explain and provide a solution per flaw.
Study:
A group of researchers conduct an unstructured Canada wide survey examining the relationship between social isolation and rates of suicide in the month of March 2020. They hypothesize that the more time people spend in social isolation the more likely they feel disconnected from support networks that benefit their overall well-being. The direction of their research considers a deductive approach. In their design they apply a longitudinal panel study, administering the survey to the same people one time in the month of March 2020. In their sampling procedure the researchers apply a non-probability sampling design. The aim is to sample 50 people across Canada. They choose to focus their attention on a target population of individuals who have signed up for a free online in-person counseling session. They use the online list of emails as their sampling frame and then purposively select the first 50 cases until they find 50 emails. While they send out 50 surveys, they are only able to generate a 2% response rate. Once the data is collected, the researchers claim that the surveys represent all of Canada. They then code the data and the hypothesis is tested.
