Identifying Variables (Can my problem be revised, and if if did something wrong, can you show why?)
Tape recordings were made of two 30-minute interviews conducted by a trained graduate student.
Each of the 60 female subjects was asked to "talk about your daily experiences". For a random half of the subjects the interviewer responded to expressions of emotions by 'reflection" (e.g. Oh, you are feeling sad because your boyfriend cheated on your with your best friend); for the other half of the subjects the interviewer responded to emotional expressions with "acceptance" (e.g. Uh-hmm, I understand. Tell me more). After the interviews, each subject was measured on a standardized depression scale that ranged from 10 (low depression) to 50 (severe depression).
