If a hierarchy contains a layer $($might be a single class$)$ which has no data, but provides an abstract API of sorts for its children to follow $--$ and may therefore serve to clarify the tree to programmers using these classes $--$ is this okay?

If you do this, what members must be in the class for the hierarchy to compile and run correctly?
