Problem 2. The town Pleasantville is testing their drinking to make sure it passes EPA standards. They want to test the lead concentration by taking a random sample of 30 different residences and testing the water at those locations. For all residences in the town (the whole population) the actual lead concentration is normally distributed with an average of 13ug/L and a standard deviation of 2/g/L. (a) What do we know about the distribution of all possible sample means? What is the expected value and standard error for the sample means? What assumptions have we met? Are there any assumptions that we haven't met? It is normally distributed. (b) The EPA maximum allowable lead concentration in drinking water is 15ug/L. What is the probability that the sample average from the 30 house- holds exceeds this? Sketch the appropriate distribution and shade in the area representing this probability. (c) What is the probability that one single household exceeds this maximum allowable lead concentration? (HINT: what if we change our sample size to n = 1?) Sketch the appropriate distribution and shade in the area representing this probability
