To determine the solubility place about one third of your sample of each substance in 3 separate small beakers and add about 1-2 mL of distilled water. Swirl the mixture for 2-3 minutes and record your results. If your substance does dissolve, evaporate the solvent using the hot plate to recover your solid. Similarly determine the solubility in hexane, an organic solvent. If the substance dissolves, evaporate the solvent to recover it. Hexane should be evaporated in the fume hood. Question Devise a procedure for separating a mixture of the three substances. Write out your plan. Now in a clean beaker add 0.30 grams of substance A, substance B and substance C. Record the mass of each. Mix the three together. Apply your procedure for separating the three substances, and weigh each of your recovered substances. Determine the % recovery for each.
