If two categorical variables are independent, knowing the value of one variable won't help you guess the value of the other. If the two variables are associated, or nondependent, knowing the value of one variable gives you information about the likely value of the other for a given observation. Before you join the discussion, consider the following hypothetical sample of 750 adults: - _- _- Each row in the table represents the number of people in the sample who are in the military currently, a veteran of military service, or have never been in the military at all. Each column represents the number of people in the sample who have a college education, only a high school education, or less than a high school education.
