If you were a health insurance provider, would you offer health insurance to someone who regularly engages in risky health behaviors, such as smoking, drug use, excessive alcohol use, etc.? Additionally, would you offer health insurance to someone who regularly consumes an unhealthy diet, such as sugars/HFCS, trans fats, non-natural preservatives, etc.? Both types of individuals are willingly engaging in these actions; meaning, no one is making them smoke or eat sugar...they choose . Many would say that these individuals are an excessive burden financially on the health care system in the United States, and since choice is involved, they can choose to not engage in such behavior. Although a health insurance provider cannot dictate what a person consumes or puts into their system, they may choose not to insure someone for a variety of reasons. Do you feel such risky behaviors should be insurable? If you were a health insurance provider, how would you handle such a situation? And finally, taking all of this into account, what is your opinion of the current health care system in the United States? Elaborate on all of this.
