Had that system been used this year, the pre-determined overhead rate would have been $115 per direct-labor hour. Barry has recently implemented an activity-based job costing system. Direct materials and direct labor are still used, but Barry replaced the single overhead rate with rates for five separate overhead cost pools. Pertinent data follow: ACTIVITY AREA Materials handling Lathe work Milling Grinding Testing COST DRIVER ALLOCATION RATE Number of parts $ 0.40 Number of turns $ 0.20 Number of machine hours $20.00 Number of parts $ 0.80 Number of units tested $15.00 The two jobs processed under the new system in the most recent period had the following characteristics: Direct materials cost Direct labor cost Number of direct labor hours Number of parts Number of turns Number of machine hours Number of units (all tested) JOB 410 $ 9,700 $ 750 25 500 20,000 150 10 JOB 411 $59,900 $11,250 375 2,000 60,000 1,050 200 REQUIREMENTS: (1) Compute the PER-UNIT costs of each job (Job 410 & Job 411) using the traditional system. (2) Compute the PER-UNIT costs of each job (Job 410 and Job 411) using the activity-based system. (3) Actual overhead costs were $50,600. Five of the ten units from Job 410 have been sold, while 150 of the 200 units from Job 411 have been sold. All other units remain in finished goods inventory. Calculate under/over allocated overhead and prorate the amount using overhead in the ending balances. Include the appropriate journal entry.
