Abstract Many accidents and injuries happen to elderly people and may lead to serious damage like disabilities and in some cases, death. Most of those injuries are caused by falling, therefore a fall-detection and system has been developed in this study to detect the fall to minimize its drawbacks. This system is based on a wireless wearable sensor system (WSS) comprised of a 3-axis accelerometer, gyroscope and a heart-rate sensor. This system is placed on the center of the chest to collect real-time motion data of various daily activities (i.e. walking, running, sitting and falling). Tests were conducted on 8 humans. The results of the experiments show that the algorithm detects falls compared to other daily movements with a sensitivity and specificity of 92.2% and 99.5%, respectively.
