Our primary investigation is what is the relationship between the height of a ramp and the kinetic energy of a cart rolling down it? We will also discuss the forces involved in the motion. Imagine we are using actual equipment in real life. Take time to do a proper procedure in the past passive voice. Include all the elements of a formal lab report. Section Specific Information: Materials: The cart will ALWAYS be 5kg. Never change that! Observations: Observation table (make sure to include units). Complete 5 trials: Trial Mass of cart Height of Eg at max Max velocity Ek at max ramp height velocity Analysis: 1. Sample calculation: a. Eg b. Ek 2. Graph: Height v Max Kinetic Energy 3. Discussion questions This simulation is unrealistic in that it doesn't include friction. What would you expect to observe in a similar real life scenario and why? Make specific references to ENERGY. b. Imagine in real life there was a coefficient of kinetic friction of 0.4 between the plastic wheels of the cart and the wooden ramp. If there is only friction on the flat part of the track, how far would the cart go before it stopped if it started from a height of 4m? Show your calculations C. The cart is set up with a frictionless apparatus as shown in the figure below. If the cart launched from the spring has an initial velocity of 12.3m/s how high up the ramp would it go? Show your work. 5kg 4. Draw a free body diagram of the cart on a frictionless track when: a. The cart is at the top of the ramp before it begins moving b. The cart halfway down the ramp c. The cart on the flat part of the track 5. Imagine the cart was free fall dropped from rest from a height of 2.5m. Compare the final speed achieved using conservation of energy and forces and motion equations. (calculate Vf both ways)
