Imagine you are working at a criminal law firm. A client has been charged with murdering a school bus full of children. The police are currently looking for the bus. During a meeting with your supervising attorney, you learn where the bus is located. Can you tell the police? Some of you may be thinking of the distraught parents agonizing about the location of their child's body. Some of you may be thinking that if the guy is guilty, then the police should have the bodies. The answer is, "no." As long as you are 100% certain the children are already dead, you cannot tell anyone where the bus is located. This was hyperbole or an extreme exaggeration. Most of the time, you won't have knowledge of the location of a school bus full of dead bodies. You will, however, know sensitive information about your clients. Perhaps you'll learn where one hid a weapon. You may learn one has a drug addiction. One of the cornerstones of legal practice is attorney-client privilege and client confidentiality. More than one legal assistant has gotten fired for discussing a client's business outside the walls of the office, and rightly so. The level of supervision over legal assistants varies from office-to-office and attorney-to-attorney. As you grow in your career, the level of supervision required by your immediate boss should decrease. How you deal with situations like the one above will determine the level of trust your supervisor has in your ability to handle confidential information.
