Imagine you were a judge reviewing the actions of the law enforcement in the two scenarios in the two videos: (i) where the officers are searching and interrogating workers in a factory, and (ii) where the officers are stopping people to check their immigration status. You must weigh the government's interest in protecting society with the individual's right to be free from government intervention. You will do so by doing each:

1) Consider our lessons regarding the role of law enforcement in society.

2) Consider our lessons on the limits the constitution puts on that power and the protections afforded to individuals in interacting with the police.

3) Consider how the Framer's of the constitution balance out the individual liberties with the government's need to protect society. Do by considering this Assignment Lesson page on how the court has limited the scope of constitutional protections when applied in the immigration context. Immigration and Crime here.

(study note- These are supplemental, as they are not tested on for this course; they are provided to help you form an opinion for the analysis. Review it in the detail you need to form an opinion.)

4) Watch both videos to see where the law enforcement is infringing of the individuals' liberties/freedoms.

4a) Abused- Postville Raid -

Description - a "perversion of the U.S. Constitution, the rule of law, and due process, and the human face of immigration are revealed through the gripping personal stories of the individuals, the families and the town that survived the most brutal, most expensive and largest immigration raid in the history of the United States."

4b) State of Arizona -

Description- the film follows Arizona's controversial "show me your papers" law through the stories of Arizonans on all sides of this divisive issue from those who wrote it, to those who supported it, to those who dreaded its wrath. Frustrated with federal inaction and rising border tensions, Arizona lawmakers ignite a national maelstrom by introducing SB 1070. The tough law is designed to make life so harsh for unauthorized immigrants that they will "self-deport."
