Negative Impact on Hotel and Accommodation Sector of Covid-19 on the Canadian Economy: 1. Major Revenue Downturn:Canada's tourism industry took a major hit from the COVID-19 pandemic, which is an important source of employment and growth in their economy. There was a devastating effect on the Canadian tourism sector due to COVID-19 pandemic actions like hotels and accommodations. This resulted in an abrupt fall in demand for travel both internationally and domestically as countries closed their borders imposing strict travel restrictions. Many tourist enterprises such as hotels made losses worth millions of dollars caused by reduced income. In early April 2020, hotel occupancy rates across Canada went below 20% which indicated the emptiness of most hotels. Businesses were thus affected directly by the travel bans imposed with most hospitality industries suffering heavily from government interventions regarding this matter. The Tourism Sector experienced a sharp annual decline in the gross domestic product (GDP) by 47.9 percent in 2020 compared to the overall economy declining slowly at -5.4 percent (Statistics Canada, 2021). Before the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak; tourism activities were booming generating billions of dollars into GDPs while also supporting multiple employments. Nevertheless, international visitors abruptly stopped streaming into this country following the sudden closure of borders coupled with stringent travel limitations causing local tourists' numbers to reduce drastically. These restrictions, including travel restrictions, border closures, and limitations on inter-provincial travel, have significantly reduced the demand for hotel rooms and services. This demand reduction has greatly affected hotel operations and revenue.

2. Job Insecurity and Layoff of Workers in the Hospitality and Accommodation Industry: There is a lot of job losses that has occurred in the accommodation industry due to restriction and decrease in demand. As a result, many hotels and other tourist facilities have faced imminent closures and subsequent massive job losses due to the pandemic. Due to the few numbers of guests in the hotels, many hotel workers lost their jobs as a result. It was because there were few visitors at the hotels therefore it did not require more workforce. For instance, hotel occupancy in some Canadian provinces dropped due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in November 2021(Statista, 2024)
