By January 9th, 2007, the iPhone launched. It was the first widely available smartphone with multi-touch capabilities. The multi-touch smartphone paved the way for the tablet and the coming convergence of the laptop, tablet and smartphone as well as new hybrids such as cloud-connected glasses and smartwatches. In a few years, the Samsung Galaxy S, a touchscreen-enabled, slate-format Android smartphone designed, developed, and marketed by Samsung Electronics was released. It is the first smartphone of the Samsung Galaxy S series and the first device of the third Android smartphone series produced by Samsung. It was announced to the press in March 2010 and released for sale in June 2010.

Motorola was the first company to produce a handheld mobile phone. On April 3, 1973, Martin Cooper, a Motorola researcher and executive, made the first mobile telephone call from handheld subscriber equipment, placing a call to Dr. Joel S. Engel of Bell Labs, his rival.
